U.S. airlines are readying for another round of fare hikes.
United Continental raised the majority of its domestic fares by $2 to $5 one-way, excluding sales categories.
United Continental's attempt comes fresh on the heels of the successful Southwest $5 one way initiated increase.
Experts says the chances of the fare increase holding are uncertain.
Conditions in the industry appear ripe for additional fare-hike attempts in the coming weeks.
Demand trends are sufficiently robust at the moment such that one of the largest U.S. airlines sees fit to push fares higher.
Of course, news of United Continental's latest fare-hike attempt comes as airlines are increasingly facing headwinds over the most-recent run-up in fuel prices. As the cost of oil rises, carriers are all but certain to try to raise fares to help offset growing fuel expenses.
